The
Chicago Car Show Ride and Demonstration (Feb. 7)
The
Chicago Auto Show is the industry's crown jewel event. We coordinated our
action for opening day when there was nationwide TV coverage. About 60
of us met at Daley Plaza and rode the 3 miles to the site. God is surely
on our side since He gave us a 40-degree sunny day in February. On arrival,
we circled through the driveway at the main entrance shouting "Say No to
the Car Show," "Cars Kill," and various chants. Security people
tried to stop us, but there were more of us, so we went right through.
Then we took over the sidewalk, hung anti-car and pro-bike banners, and
distributed car "fact sheet" flyers to show attendees, and tried to engage
them in a dialogue (altho the concept of anti-car is, to many people, anti-American,
so I'm not sure if we got many converts -- it appears the Auto Show will
NOT be shut down because of us).
Nevertheless, we scored a first
-- no one as far as we know has ever protested the car show like this.
We made our point, then went to a nearby restaurant for a late lunch and
a few beers -- and talked about our upcoming summer events.
At least, if the velorution never
happens, we can say we had a lot of fun trying!
